  • Will My Insurance Cover Alternative Medicine Treatments?

Most insurance does cover chiropractic and physical therapy services. The Leasenby Clinic participates in the Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO programs. We are also a part of Private Health Care Systems (PHCS) used by many smaller insurance companies. The best way to find out your specific coverage is to call our office. With the information on your insurance card, we can learn more about your benefits.

  • How Soon Can I Get an Appointment to See the Doctor?

If you are having an emergency, in most cases, we will see you the same day you call - as soon as possible. The doctor will come in early or stay late to take care of you as needed. In other cases, we usually make an appointment and have you seen within two days. If you have a life-threatening emergency, you should call 911.

  • I Have Been Told There Is Nothing Else That Can Be Done to Help My Pain. Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture has been used for centuries for pain control. Many times, even when conventional methods have not been able to reach the pain, acupuncture helps balance the nerve impulses to give you relief. Doctor Leasenby has experience treating all types of pain. After hearing your history and examining you, he will have a good idea of how acupuncture could work for you.

  • Are Chiropractic Adjustments Painful?

Under normal circumstances, chiropractic adjustments are painless. In cases of recent trauma, like whiplash, you may have some mild discomfort due to the inflammation. The doctor has training in many chiropractic techniques. Doctor Leasenby prefers to use gentle, effective methods using the least amount of force. We also have special equipment that helps make adjustments painless.

  • How Old Should a Person Be Before They Get Chiropractic Treatment?

Chiropractic patients range in years from birth to old age. Regardless of age, the vertebrae can become misaligned. Even the birth process may cause trauma to the neck and spine. Left uncorrected, the vertebral misalignment may disturb the delicate spinal cord and nerves that control a child’s muscles and organs. In some cases, an uncorrected misalignment may lead to scoliosis, colic, or illness. An early chiropractic check-up may detect many spinal problems while they are still easily correctable.

  • Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Your comfort is our primary concern. Acupuncture uses tiny needles the size of one strand of hair. Sometimes you may feel a quick sting like a mosquito, but many times you will not even know the doctor has started the treatment. It does not hurt like the classic hypodermic needles used for giving shots. Many people experience a soothing feeling as the nerve flow begins to balance.

  • How Do I Know If I Am Taking the Right Vitamins and Herbal Supplements?

It is very difficult for an individual to know what vitamins are right for him or her without a lot of training. Doctor Leasenby constantly studies the latest journals and research to keep up with new information. He suggests you schedule a nutritional appointment and bring in the vitamins, herbs, and prescriptive medicines that you are currently taking. After learning your history and doing an exam, the doctor can advise you on your body’s needs. Sometimes blood or urine tests may be ordered. You may bring up your herbal questions at any office visit to get his expert opinion.

  • How Long Should I Expect It to Take Before I Feel Better?

In our clinic, there is usually a significant reduction in symptoms immediately or shortly following the chiropractic adjustment. Your response to chiropractic care depends on numerous factors. Some of these factors include the amount of time you have had your symptoms, the cause of your symptoms, the number of symptoms, the number of biomechanical dysfunctions you have, the presence of arthritis, your activity, and your history of past injuries.

  • Once I Begin Chiropractic Care, Do I Have to Continue for the Rest of My Life?

The truth is most chiropractic patients who seek care from pain relief recover from their symptoms within a short period of time. Chiropractic produces permanent relief without medication in patients who have suffered from chronic pain for years. That's why patients choose to continue periodic check-ups after their symptoms have subsided to ward off other future ailments.

  • Can a chiropractor help with numbness?

    a. Absolutely. Numbness in diseases and injuries are caused by compression or inflammation either in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) or more commonly in the peripheral nervous system (from the nerve roots where they leave the spine to where they receive signals from the rest of the body). Different tissues, such as herniated discs in the spine, enlarged blood vessels, scar tissue from injuries or surgery, spinal cord/nerve inflammation, or muscular injuries/overuse can cause swelling that can cause a compression on these nerves which will interrupt the signal.

Think about a time when your leg has fallen asleep in the past. Likely you were in a position that placed that additional pressure on that nerve. For our example, we’ll say sitting on your own leg in a desk chair. Over time, that position presses on the nerves causing numbness and tingling. When you get up and move in a way that’s no longer compressing the nerve the numbness disappears and tingling at first increases (more signal getting through) and then dissipates. The same thing happens with more chronic numbness, but we must figure out where the compression is, what it’s cause is, and how to release that pressure.

The first step is a history and physical exam, to determine the underlying cause of the condition. In some cases, this may require imaging or advanced tests such as x-ray, CT scans, MRIs or EMG tests which can all help determine the cause. Once that diagnosis has been made, the chiropractor will provide treatment to release the nerve compression. This can include performing gentle adjustments to the spine and extremities, flexion-distraction technique (a specialized type of decompression especially effective in disc injuries), acupuncture, deep tissue and instrument assisted soft tissue techniques, cold laser therapy, pin-and-stretch techniques, and many others. The chiropractor may also give home care options such as Rock Tape, heat and or cold packs on effected areas, stretches and exercises, anti-inflammatory supplements or changes to diet.

The Leasenby Clinic has a myriad of options and will tailor a specific treatment plan to your case and needs. Not every person is going to respond the same to any one treatment and when something is not working for you, we always have alternatives to help customize a treatment that’s both effective and comfortable.

  • Can a chiropractor treat nerve damage?

    a. Nerve damage can occur with long term compression of nerves. With chiropractic care, these compressions can be removed and allow the nerve to heal over time. Nerve damage can also occur due to autoimmune diseases, diabetes, drug side effects and toxic substances, nutritional deficiencies, infectious diseases, and motor neuron diseases. While not of these conditions are treated directly by chiropractic, such as a completely severed nerve, or a cancerous lesion which may require surgery or other medical interventions, even in these severe cases chiropractic and other complementary medicine fields can be beneficial in both minimizing pain and numbness/tingling, rehabilitating lost function, and helping your body get into and stay in a pro-healing, anti-inflammatory state.

The Leasenby Clinic has an eclectic set of skills in our toolbox including a variety of chiropractic adjustment and mobilization techniques, deep tissue and instrument assisted soft tissue techniques, acupuncture, nutritional/herbal support, and rehabilitation exercises. Low level laser treatments are also shown to be effective on pain related to neuropathy, reducing inflammation, and accelerating growth and repair of nerves over time. Come in for an appointment and have one of our doctors tailor a treatment for your individual case.

  • How can a chiropractor help pregnant women?

    a. Chiropractic is used safely and effectively to treat pregnant women. Not only can chiropractic help manage hip, back, joint, and even neck pain associated with pregnancy, but chiropractic techniques can also help expectant mothers with pelvic balance and stability.  This can help provide as much space as possible to the developing baby and may even lead to faster and easier delivery as well as comfort through the later half of pregnancy. Chiropractic and associated techniques can also help maintain range of motion, strength and function through pregnancy and post-natal care.

At the Leasenby clinic all of our doctors have undergone additional training with the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and are trained in the Webster technique to help balance the pelvis. In addition, we provide acupuncture, and specialized nutritional advice to help ensure your baby is given the best nourishment to grow on and to help mom with conditions such as morning sickness and appetite issues. Make an appointment today to help keep both you and your growing child happy, healthy, and functional.

  • What can acupuncture help with?

    a. Acupuncture can be useful for a variety of conditions and can be added to almost any treatment plan we provide. While the most common condition we treat with acupuncture is pain, it has been shown in NIH studies to help with nausea and vomiting- including that caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy, dental pain after surgery, addiction and smoking cessation, headaches and migraines, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow and other tendinopathies, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, as adjunct care for anxiety and depression and many other conditions.

Acupuncture is traditionally treated with sterile, single-use, hair-sized needles placed at specific points throughout the body occasionally with mild electrical stimulation applied. While most people find the treatment painless and comfortable, those with needle aversion, hypersensitivities, and some children prefer to avoid needles. As such, alternate stimulation methods can be used in office including manual stimulation by hand or tool (acupressure), laser, and cupping.

If you’re interested in acupuncture for treating any of the above conditions or others make an appointment to consult with one of our doctors and have acupuncture added to a tailored treatment plan made just for you

  • What can a chiropractor do for chronic pain?

    a. Chronic pain is unfortunately on the rise in the modern world due to a variety of factors including high stress levels, an aging population, environmental factors, pro-inflammatory diets, wear and tear from higher average BMIs, increased rates of autoimmune diseases and other chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, migraines, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, arthritis) that cause or increase the likelihood of chronic pain. A Chiropractor will perform a physical exam and thorough history to determine the cause of your chronic pain. From there, a treatment plan can be created including spinal manipulation, manual therapies, and therapeutic exercise as appropriate for you.

In addition to these standard chiropractic techniques, our doctors at the Leasenby Clinic provide complementary therapies including acupuncture, low level laser therapy, herbal and nutritional support, dietary advice, and resources on mind-body interventions such as mindfulness and mediation. Make an appointment today and we’ll tailor a treatment plan for your individual circumstances and lifestyle.
