180 Lifesyle Program

REVERSING OBESITY, ILLNESS, AND AGING
The 180 program was born out of the need for me and my wife, Kim, to be able to lose a lot of weight in a healthy and efficient way. In early January of 2017 we embarked on an attempt to get to healthy body weights using a diet that had been very successful for us in the past. We were excited, motivated, and mentally ready to lose the fat so that we could have a healthier future. In two years I would be turning sixty and as a doctor I had studied for years the illnesses of aging and had experienced them with my own family members. Diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, loss of bone and muscle mass, dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease and more had struck down many of our loved ones. For myself and Kim I wanted to avoid all of it, slash the odds that we would be likewise afflicted and have our golden years polluted.
After two months of trying with this previously successful approach I had lost a measly 13 pounds and then actually began putting weight back on! Kim lost a paltry 6 pounds and then she and I both hit a plateau. So, we mentally regrouped and took another run at our warped metabolisms with another, also previously very successful diet from our past years. I lost only 6 pounds, and Kim lost nothing!
I remember having an “Uh oh” moment then. “Now what do we do?” I asked myself. For several years I knew I needed to get my weight under control for my health’s sake, but I put it off all that time purely for the love of food. And, I believed when I had a mind to, I could lose all the weight I wanted or needed, because I had accomplished it in years gone by. In April 2017 the new reality hit, and I was in a quandary.

The next four and a half months were spent studying, researching, and experimenting. I remember having a recurring thought, “You have to get away from food; food is the problem.” But what did that mean? How can you get away from food? It is necessary for all the body’s tissues, organs, and processes. It is necessary for good health, yet somehow it also contributes to illness.

A thought kept returning to me; Kim and I have traveled to other countries and partaken heavily of the local cuisine and come back weighing less than when we left! But that never happens here at home. I had a realization… I didn’t have to get away from food in general, just food as we all know it. Food… as we know it in our society and culture… is the problem.

But, how could I get away from it? This is what led me to the idea of using meal replacement shakes.

Meal replacement shakes are not a new concept by any means so I figured there were some great ones out there. I was wrong. For two months I researched dozens of them finding the ingredients to be lacking, either entirely missing or in too small quantities or of cheap quality. I found a few that did fill the requirements of a true balanced meal replacement (not just a protein shake, or a meal supplement shake) with high quality ingredients, but they all left a lot to be desired when it came to taste and overall satisfaction.

At this point I knew two things. First, that I would be replacing two meals per day with a meal replacement shake, therefore the quality of the ingredients had to be the highest possible. I was not about to ingest cheap quality while trying to make my body healthy. Second, it had to taste good and be satisfying or I could never stay with the program. After all, I really loved food! Both concepts were important because I knew that it would take me almost a year to lose all the weight necessary for a healthy body. I decided to blend the shakes myself to get it right.

By September 2017 I had the first shake blend in a rich chocolate flavor which was very satisfying, and I had the daily prescribed food meal figured out. I was nervous about starting because of my love of food. I wondered if I would miss it too much, if it would be too hard, and as one of the joys of my life would it be too difficult to be without. By late September we had started and there was never any looking back. Each day and each week became easier and by the third week we were “solid on system” or “SOS” as we are fond of saying. I lost 21 pounds in my first month and over 33 pounds by Thanksgiving, which was two months SOS. At three months, just four days before Christmas Eve, I reached 42 pounds down and my lowest weight in 3 years… it was the best Christmas gift! I now am 86.5 pounds down and my lowest weight since 1998! I feel fantastic and continue to feel and notice healing benefits of turning around my body metabolism.

It was not my original thought to make the 180 program available outside myself and Kim. I thought it would be too difficult for people and that Kim and I were just lucky enough to pull it off. But in January 2018 people were noticing our changing bodies. Patients began asking what we were doing to lose weight and many were people whose metabolic states were deteriorating and allowing the development of inflammation and illness. I began placing patients on this program as a therapy and they began healing. Now the positive results we see are often overwhelming. Most participants reversing illnesses such as GERD, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart problems, rising blood sugar, and more in just a few months, and often their doctors are decreasing or removing their medications because their bodies are healing. I created the 180 Program to deal with all the weight loss and dieting obstacles that had plagued me through my adult life. What I would come to find out was: all of us have the same ones!
The 180 program begins with an initial visit with me at this office. Among other steps, we set what we call your Base Weight. This is the weight you are traveling toward and is a healthy weight for your body to live a healthy life.
As a natural physician this is some of the best work I have done because it does so much for so many people. I am always excited to welcome a new patient to the program.
